Travel east on one of Brevard’s five causeways over the sparkling Intracoastal Waterway and you will find yourself “beachside.”

Seventy-two miles of Atlantic Ocean connect Brevard’s beach towns. You can camp at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral or search for sea turtles in Melbourne Beach.

A drive along A1A through Brevard’s colorful beachside towns is the best way to learn and discover what the locals know…paradise found is eastward bound.

Situated on a barrier island between the Banana River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, Cocoa Beach is the perfect place for residents and visitors to have some fun in the sun. For many in Cocoa Beach, fun in the sun means surfing waves and frolicking on the beach.

This sun-splashed city is well known for its great surfing and world champion surfers like Kelly Slater who grew up in, and still calls Cocoa Beach home.

Founded in 1883, Melbourne Beach is Brevard County’s oldest beach community. Colorful townhomes, single-family homes and condos are set in tropical surroundings. Along Riverside Drive many of Melbourne Beach’s most elegant homes grace the Indian River. A number of historic buildings add charm to the town including the Ryckman House, the City Pier and the Community Chapel.

The Indian River creates a perfect opportunity for nature lovers to explore all the river has to offer. Dolphins and manatees can often be found feeding and playing close to shore. A unique wonder of nature in Melbourne Beach and surrounding beaches is the laying and hatching of sea turtle eggs.

Melbourne Beach is home to the Society for the Preservation of Sea Turtles, an organization committed to educating residents and visitors and ultimately, protecting sea turtles.

Located between the Indian and Banana Rivers, Merritt Island is a community full of natural wonder. Included among the many parks in Merritt Island is the Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is nestled along Sykes Creek which has a walking trail, access for canoeing and boating and a tower for bird watching.

Manatee Cover features manatees, bottlenose dolphins and a myriad of other frolicking wildlife. When not exploring the wonders of nature, Merritt Island residents shop, dine and play in the heart of the city.

The Merritt Island Mall has staple retail stores, several surrounding restaurants and a state-of-the-art movie theater. Boating, fishing, and kayaking are just some of the water activities residents can easily enjoy.

With all Merritt Island has to offer, residents need not leave the island. But a quick drive over the Banana River leads to Cocoa Beach and the blue waters of the Atlantic.

The northmost city in Brevard, Mims is a rural community with heart. Featuring acres of farm land and horse ranches, you can escape to the country yet be minutes from the city and beaches.

Mims is primarily residential and most residents find that this area meshes with Titusville often.

There are several beautiful features in this part of town including access to the Canaveral Sea Shore, Ever After Farms, and Sledd’s U-Pick Farm.

Titusville was built around the Kennedy Space Center and quickly expanded. This community features gorgeous riverside condos, golf course communities, and an affordable lifestyle.

Local shopping is all around and a brand new mall, Titus Landing, and a state-of-the-art medical plaza was recently added. With easy access to the beach and Orlando, you get the best of both worlds.

Titusville has a revitalized downtown area with fantastic parades, bars and breweries and small town dining. Very few commercial restaurants reside in Titusville, allowing you to truly be a local.

When rocket launches occur, hundreds flock to Titusville for the best views in the county. You can even feel the ground shake!

Port. St John is a fantastic residential area that makes up the northernmost part of Cocoa. With easy access to the Indian River, I-95 to Orlando and the 407 to Kennedy Space Center, this area is truly centrally located.

From US 1, you can see the impressive Vehicle Assembly Building and beautiful sunsets over the Indian River.

This area has expanded rapidly and has fantastic local coffee shops, medical plazas, and parks! You get the small hometown feel in this quaint community. With dog parks and riverside parks, you can enjoy the outdoors or spend your time at the sports complex for Saturday baseball games.

This area is relatively new and is still building new homes too!

Cocoa has long been admired for its historic downtown village and stately mansions along Riverside Drive. Now luxury condominiums with breathtaking views of the Indian River add sophistication and drama to this very diverse city.

Cocoa remains a mostly residential community with many new homes, shopping centers and eateries. Riverside Park is one of the newer gems in Cocoa.

Located in Historic Cocoa Village, the park has a boardwalk along the river, a playground and an outdoor amphitheater where local bands frequently perform.

Also located in Cocoa Village are the Cocoa Village Playhouse, antique stores, fine dining establishments and specialty boutiques. Other events held throughout the year include several art and craft fairs, car shows and Sip & Strolls.

Rockledge is a peaceful town located in the center of Brevard County. Like Cocoa, its eastern edge gracefully curves along the Indian River.

The town’s first homes, many restored to their original beauty, and the Rockledge Presbyterian church face the rocky edge of the river (hence the town’s name).

Rockledge Regional Medical Center provides full service medical care for residents of Rockledge and surrounding areas. Rockledge Country Club has an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and a clubhouse.

Suntree’s easy access to I-95 and its many lovely neighborhoods make it a perfect community for commuters. Orlando is only an hour drive west.

The Suntree Country Club has an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a swimming pool and lovely dining area and ballroom for special occasions.

Housing in Suntree consists of mainly single-family homes and multi-family courtyard homes. Suntree neighborhoods are well planned and many have lake and golf course views, parks and playgrounds close by.

Melbourne is an excellent choice when looking for a quiet neighborhood, the perfect employer, quality schools and exceptional arts and entertainment. Choices in higher education in Melbourne are abundant and include Florida Institute of Technology, Warner Southern College, Florida Metropolitan University, Keiser College and Eastern Florida State College.

Melbourne is well-known for its many high-tech companies including L3Harris Corporation, Northrup Grumman and AuthenTec Corporation.

The arts community in Melbourne is as alive and creative as ever. Residents routinely enjoy the many art galleries, theaters and concert halls in Melbourne including The King Center for Performing Arts, The Henegar Center and The Brevard Museum of Art and Science.

The annual Melbourne Art Festival is held on the last full weekend April at Wickham Park and includes a juried art show, a 5k run and daily entertainment. Melbourne’s downtown area has been fully revitalized and is truly a special place to shop, dine and enjoy the company of friends.

West Melbourne features a mix of larger lot homes that have a quiet country feel and planned communities close to A rated schools. The growth in West Melbourne, however, has been anything but laid back.

Wickham Road, West Melbourne’s busiest area has added brightly colored shopping centers filled with eateries, retail shops, and grocery stores.

Melbourne Village is a wooded community of 324 unique homes and a police department. This unique community is hidden away but only minutes from Melbourne shopping and dining.

Melbourne Village is only .06 square miles and is a nature lover’s dream with larger lots and close proximity to shopping, dining, and travel.

Bordering the east side of the area is Erna Nixon Park, bringing hikers to its wonderous walking trails.

With over 100,000 residents, Palm Bay is by far the largest city on the Space Coast. Malabar is a small town on Brevard’s mainland. Just over 2,800 people live in Malabar, which runs along U.S. 1 and the Indian River.

Large lots on one acre or more make up most of the housing in a rural setting affording the peaceful lot that residents love.

While this area is almost completely residential, some of Brevard County locals favorite restaurants are in Malabar, including Yellow Dog Café.

On the North side of Malabar is Turkey Creek Sanctuary where over 130 acres of protected land is home to Florida critters and attracts nature enthusiasts with walking, hiking, and biking trails.

On July 25, 2006 the neighboring towns of Grant and Valkaria joined together. Highlights of the newly incorporated Grant-Valkaria community are the Grant Seafood Festival (www.grantseafoodfestival.com) held the 1st weekend in March.

Run entirely by volunteers this festival had its 50th annual event in 2016 and all proceeds are put back into the community.

The projects include a Scholarship Fund, the Grant Library, and the Grant Historical House. Another highlight is the Habitat at Valkaria, a 6,836 yard championship golf course that weaves and rolls through wetlands and scrub jay habitats, and the Valkaria airport.

Many of the Grant-Valkaria area homes are newer communities offering homeowners large homes and lots.

Barefoot Bay and Snug Harbor are tranquil communities in the city of Micco just a few steps from the Indian River. Area residents enjoy a relaxed Florida lifestyle.

Both communities feature planned activities and outings for residents. Barefoot Bay has it’s own private general store, a community center for games and golfing, and a private fishing dock.

Micco is south of Grant-Valkaria and is the southmost part of Brevard County, bordering Sebastian and Indian River County.

Boating and fishing enthusiasts enjoy Micco’s many fishing piers, boat ramps, marine facilities and the close proximity to the Sebastian Inlet.

Mostly retirees make their home in this economical and quiet community. Respect for natural Florida preservation is alive and well here as the Micco Scrub Sanctuary protects over 1300 acres of wetlands and flatwoods.

The sanctuary provides family fun with biking trails and horseback riding.
